We believe conversation is the catalyst for change.

The "Listen, Learn, Act” conversation series has been thoughtfully designed to engage youth and their parents in racial justice advocacy. In order to achieve racial justice, we must learn, unlearn and listen to, then amplify, the voices of color and experience.

Connecticut native, Serena R. Gatlin has more than 15 years of professional experience in sports media and television entertainment. Her advocacy for young adults and women of color stem from her early life experiences in the foster care system, becoming a teen mother and the overall challenges women face in the workforce. Serena's desire to help others overcome similar obstacles sparked the manifestation ofHER ZONE, INC., a nonprofit and grassroots initiative dedicated to empowering and improving the mental, physical and economic strength of young women of color, ages 13-24 in under-resourced communities, the judicial system, and transitioning from incarceration into society. In addition, Serena is involved in several local and national organizations that advocate for the youth, young women, and the disadvantaged.

Serena serves on the Executive Board of the Southern New England Association of Black Journalists (SNEABJ), the National Planning Committee of Women In Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN) and is a State of Connecticut Certified Sexual Assault Advocate and volunteer counselor with Sexual Assault Crisis Services (SACS) in partnership with the YWCA. As a mentor and Board member with GOODWorks, Serena is able to help the nonprofit organization in assisting and supporting women during and after their incarceration at York Correctional Institution in Connecticut.
