A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country of origin due to a fear of persecution and to escape war or natural disaster. According to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR), women and girls make up about 50 percent of any refugee or internally displaced person. Unfortunately, these women and girls are faced with a unique set of challenges ranging from famine to sexual violence, so they require increased protection and security.

In Connecticut, there has recently been a resettlement of refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine. It is essential to keep advocating and fighting for human rights for refugees.

Reach out to local representatives and have conversations on policies surrounding refugees.
Educate yourself!There is a lot of misinformation on refugees and asylum-seekers in sections of the press, social media, even sometimes from elected politicians. Studies have also found that social media sites such as Facebook have fueled violence against refugees. Ensure that your sources of information are reliable and accurate.
